I just read that Duquesne University announced today that they will be cutting four men’s varsity sports including the men’s baseball team.

The University of Vermont and Northern Iowa have also cut their programs in the past two seasons.

Because of budget cuts, the University of New Hampshire, Providence College, Iowa State and Boston University (a very wealthy, private school) have all cut their baseball programs in the past decade or so.

Why is baseball being cut?  I understand baseball is not a revenue generating sport as football and basketball at many schools, but most other sports do not generate revenue either.

The NY Times did a piece last year and mentioned cold weather as being a factor. The cost of travel to play in warm venues is too much for some schools.

This bothers me quite a bit. There are rumors of many other schools cutting baseball as well.

I'd love to hear from the CheckSwing community and get your thoughts on this.  Thanks.

I heard about this. Such a shame. UMass was on the verge of cutting their program last year.
