I was reading about how the well respected hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo has decided to leave the Texas Rangers after 15 years of service with that organization. It made me think about the role of a hitting coach.

What is a hitting coach's primary task? How do you measure the success of a hitting coach?

Does the hitting coach have a different role depending on the level of baseball?
Youth Leagues? High School? College? Professional Baseball?

Bill,
I believe a hitting coach's primary task is to 1) prepare his players with a game plan at the plate, and 2) help his players to understand and correct fundamental mistakes (if they exist) in their swings.
Success is and should be based on scoring runs. If a team (you can look this up) can score 4 or more runs a game, their winning percentage increases dramatically at the Major League level.
And most definitely, the role changes depending on the level of baseball.
BTW, Jaramillo is a fantastic hitting coach, and will be sorely missed in Texas.
