I'm doing a research on the success rate of youth baseball tournaments, how these experiences relate to the overall popularity of baseball in our country and in our families.

2011:

- On a scale of 1-10: Would you consider yourself a diehard baseball fan?

- On a scale of 1-10: Would you consider your child a diehard baseball fan?

- Does your child have aspirations of playing baseball at higher levels?

- Does your child have dreams of playing professional baseball?

- What state is your child's team from?

- How many tournaments did your team play in your home state?

- How many out of state tourney's did you play in?

- What was the furthest distance your team traveled for a tournament?

- How would your rate the condition of the fields your team played on (scale of 1-10). Please explain.

- Average # of teams per tournament were in your age bracket?

- Average # of games committed to play in each tournament.

- What type of family environment was created during tournament play.

- How do youth baseball tournaments support your child's goals of playing at higher levels?

- Does your child work with a private hitting or pitching coach?

- Were you a baseball fan before your child played the game?

- It's been said that the love of  baseball have been passed down generation to generation.  Will this happen in your family?

- Do your child/children cheer for the same professional baseball team that you do?

- Because of your child's involvement in youth tournament baseball, is your he/she more likely to become a lifelong baseball fan?

- Because of your child's involvement in youth tournament baseball, is your he/she more likely to someday sign their children up to play in a youth baseball tournament?

Thank you all for your help.

- What type of family environment was created during tournament play. competitive, stressful

- How do youth baseball tournaments support your child's goals of playing at higher levels? They don't; they are generally there for the benefit of the parent. The pressure generated by the hard-core travel team style of play generally burns out players by the time they are young teenagers. Double-blind studies verify this (see Positive Coaching Alliance white papers)

***With respect, as someone who does survey structure for a living, this seems like a survey with biased questions designed to achieve a preconceived end.  What is the purpose of this questionnaire?

Hi Ted...

Thanks for your candid responses.  There's not much science to this other than I am helping out my son with school research paper.  Thought this was a great forum for him... and thought he did a great job with the questions.  I let him know that some felt his questions were leading and one-sided.

Thanks again.

Dan

My apologies for overstepping, Dan.  It's obvious that your son has a love for the game and the baseball tourneys.  Good luck with the research paper.  It would be interesting to see the results

As an FYI, he can automate all of this for free with Survey Monkey.  The web site lets you compile free form, multiple choice, and scaled answers.  You might even be able to copy/paste what you've already done here.  It will also compile all the stats, and he can download all of the information and format it in any way he wants.  They really look professional, and you can't beat the price. I've attached one of our old surveys so you can see how it looks.

- How would your rate the condition of the fields your team played on (scale of 1-10). Please explain.

TOP FIELDS, THOSE WITH ASROTURF OUTFIELDS ARE ABOUT A 7 AND THE WORST ARE ABOUT A 4. NO FIELDS HAVE GRASS INFIELDS WHICH IS PROBABLY BECAUSE THE FIELD GET TOO MUCH USE. VERY RARELY DO THE TOURNAMENTS WATER THE FIELDS BETWEEN GAMES AND WHEN THEY DO IT'S 1/10TH ENOUGH WATER. I'VE NEVER SEEN A 10 UNLESS I GO SEE A MLB GAME.

- Average # of teams per tournament were in your age bracket?

8-10

- Average # of games committed to play in each tournament.

I THINK IF HE WERE TO PLAY IN MORE TOURNAMENTS HE WOULD LOSE THE DESIRE TO PLAY. WE ARE PLANNING ON CUTTING BACK IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I HEAR OF SO MANY KIDS THAT GET AWAY FROM BASEBALL AFTER THEY GET TO HIGH SCHOOL AND IT'S SAID TO BE BECAUSE OF BURN OUT.

- Because of your child's involvement in youth tournament baseball, is your he/she more likely to someday sign their children up to play in a youth baseball tournament?
