Great product: I have been using it with my two boys (4 & 6) and their team I coach. It is a great way to teach a (palm up / palm down) swing.

Don what is it you want me to think about? Hip on ball plane? or my comments on how well the Insider Bat will help a young player learn the best mechanics?
Don Ervin Comment by Don Ervin on December 12, 2009 at 2:52pm
Those people who encourage batters to, or who actually think that a heavier bat will create more power for them than a lighter bat that they can handle much more easily and can what I call switch the barrel need to learn what proper from the ground up rotational, rhythmic approach to making good, hard, consistent barrel to ball contact is all about, these people are very uninformed on proper mechanics and approach to hitting the baseball, as a very skinny, light weighted person with good power and hitting success at all levels I played in, I always used the thinnest handle and lightest bat I could find, a minor league home run record other good stats. along with many other batters successes was my best and most convincing test of having good rotational hitting mechanics and approach from the ground up was, and still is, the most successful method to successful hitting. one does not want their fingers digging into their hands so get that barrel into the fingers in front of the front base of the hands where the fingers attach to the hands, when the fingers even touch the hands this tells you that you are stuffing the handle into your palms which tightens your hands, wrists and fore arms clear up to your shoulders and totally restricts your swinging process from your launch position to and through the point of contact.

Jeff, Think about this,
A most important quote from "Ted Williams" The most intelligent hitter of all time and of the game of baseball, "THE HIPS" "LEAD THE WAY" Both in a rotational rhythmic half circular "NEGATIVE"" load up" movement which also when executed properly will automatically load up the hands at the same time. again, "THE HIPS" "LEAD THE WAY" then without actually stopping the movement and When the decision is made to swing with the hips in a pendulum movement first leading the way, "HIPS""KNOB & HANDS" followed by the trailing barrel, in a forward rotational positive movement, The rear hip should rotate upward and forward into the plane of the down ward flight of the ball, the knob, and hands on a ball at an angle or height that is low enough should be "brought down" with barrel trailing back with a pull with the bottom hand and a push at the same time with the top hand close to the belly button into a level plane with the down ward flight of the ball with a slight app. 5 degree up swing, route, the rear hip should rotate forward and upward into the direction and plane of the down ward flight of the ball which allows for an app.12 to 18 inches of barrel to ball contact carrying area, you want the barrel to make ball contact at it's largest intersecting point of contact. at all other ball levels and heights the barrel must also match the same plane of the particular flight of the ball to successfully make good hard consistent barrel to ball contact." Torquing" "THE BARREL" is executed with the bottom hand palm down, top hand palm up by pulling the knob back towards the catcher and at the same time flicking the top wrist and hand forward into and through the point of contact. The wrist flick is the wrist action always mentioned. The "upward" forward rotation of the rear hip into the down ward flight of the ball is what you are referring to as hip being on the same plane , if you will video tape your swing and view it in step and slow motion you will notice the position of your hands and rear hip at point of contact,
As was mentioned by Greg Lauer, GOWAGSBASEBALL.COM explains it pretty well.
For proper hand position from launching position to and through contact I like to use an ax handle which puts and keeps your hands in their proper position cut to specific lengths, not cut at the bottom where the blade fits in which is the widest and most solid part of the handle. Tape around the blade fit in area. using only tennis or non baseballs for various tee, and various soft toss drills and regular batting practice, in the cages in particular.
To effectively execute hitting a close inside ball one must read it properly and react on it by rotating the hips early enough and getting one's hands out in front early enough and far enough to make good barrel to ball contact.
Here is a hitting fact that many people do not realize, which is, major league batters included, left handed batters have a real tough task of hitting good tight inside pitches, waist high or higher more so than right handed batters do especially one's that move due to the fact that most left handed batters are loop swingers, this includes Barry Bonds, I viewd him in particular several times, and the rest unless they are capable of adjusting, which very few are capable of doing.
Type in, Coach Joe Brockhoff, "8" stages of hitting He has some very good baseball info. & video clips to view.
Let me know whether my comments and info. are helpful or not.

Greg Lauer,

Sorry my answer is a little late. But no I made suer that the bat they used was the correct weight for a player of their age. Some of the players I would have them use a bat that would normally be too light for them. I start instructing the inside swing to players at about the age of 12 or 13, because at that point the players were physically developed enough to use their forearms to pivot the bat through the strike zone versus the whole arm. Now having said that the point I made earlier about using bats that are usually deemed "too light" for a certain age may be a good alternative to teaching a proper swing in junction with the Inside Swing tool.

Is that the same as having the barrel on the ball plane? I'm not sure about the hip being on the same plane as the ball. But I'll investigate the website recomended.

I RECOMMEND GOING TO GOWAGSBASEBALL.COM SEE IF YOU CAN FIND THEIR DVD "WHY?"
IT EXPLAINS THIS VERY WELL AND IN DETAIL

the plane the ball is traveling. So you can be through that plane as long as possible
Jeff Edwards Comment by Jeff Edwards on December 11, 2009 at 10:27am
Why do you want the hands and hips on the same plane? and what plane would that be?
Greg Lauer Comment by Greg Lauer on December 11, 2009 at 9:16am
I think the other important thing to mention here is with a bat that causes such a lag in the swing the bat head can never be accelerated in front of the hands. it may not be a issue at 6u or 8u but will cause issues at 10u and up. also the bat head will drop and not be on plane with the hands and hips causing missed hits.
