I have recently started making wood bats by hand with my new lathe.  It is not a super high quality lathe, but it seems to get the job done.  One thing that keeps happening is that lines are popping up when carving and moving my tools up and down the bat.  The lines are almost like stripes.  From my assessment of the situation, I tried to increase the speed of the lathe so the tools wood stay in one spot long enough for a complete rotation of the billet.  So far I have had little luck.  If anyone has any suggestions or comments, they would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Ryan seems to me you need a steady rest. Sometimes if you are trying to take to big a bite with you chisel you will push on the stock and cause your issue. Also i found sharpening your chisels more often keeping them as sharp as possible makes a huge differance.
