The Premier Baseball Social Network for Players, Coaches, Scouts, and Umpires
Here in NY, we start our Fall baseball season this weekend. I'm very much looking forward to it.
Participation is much lower, but it's a relaxed environment and the kids who play seem to improve a great deal.
How are other Fall leagues structures around the country?
What are your objectives? Challenges?

Permalink Reply by Mike Greene on September 7, 2012 at 1:31pm Bill, our biggest problem is doing anything during the week because of football. At least half of our players (10-15 year olds) play football either through school teams or rec teams. Basically it forces us to play tournaments on weekends which is a lot more expensive and less of a developmental situation. Our JV and Varsity squads play in a league set up for them, but the younger guys don't have that situation. Locally, Little League is the dominant rec program, so there is really no sense playing through them just to waste time. It's either tournament ball or nothing at all.
Permalink Reply by Larry Cicchiello on September 7, 2012 at 2:59pm I enjoy the Spring, Summer AND Fall leagues. I've always contended that the most important stat for a young player is innings played. And Fall ball is an ideal time for a hitter or pitcher to work on something, whether it be trying something a little different at the plate or possibly a pitcher "toying" with a new pitch. Usually, but not always, it's a more relaxed atmosphere. Hope I don't jinx myself by saying that because I'm umpiring a DH tomorrow and I don't want you know what to hit the fan!
