The sequence every hitter takes. No hitter can be successfull without the following order. 1. getting into position (Andy Barkett), getting to launch position (Jason Acevedo), get set (Ted Williams) 2. pitch recognition 3. timing (which is the act o…

I would like to add to these other very informative comments by adding that "Hitting is about timing and pitching is about destroying a batters," potential hitters" timing. As Ted Williams quoted Ty Cobb as telling him to get set, ready, then get a…

A good pitch to hit is very important, but if you are not in position and have timing to hit it, it can be right down the middle and a hitter will not square it up

Just my two cents......first and foremost you have to get a good pitch to hit. Then comes your mechanics/timing.

Good article on an often overlooked aspect of hitting. The team I used to play for in the UK we had an Australian coach and he always told us to just aim to make contact with the ball, put it in to play and let the other team make the mistakes. In o…

I just joined this site and this was the first post I read. I have worked with college hitters, high school hitters, and youth players and the one reoccurring trend when a player is struggling is getting to launch position. Most of the older high sc…

Get Ready to Hit

In order two be a good hitter, you have to have two things, good swing mechanics and good timing. If you have a beautiful swing and your timing sucks, you won't hit. And vice versa. We spend a lot of time, some time too much, working on mechanics and not incorporating timing in our drills. Players have to learn body control and timing to be able to execute a good swing. The one thing I noticed as a constant in big league camp was how much players worked on getting into position on time. Wor

For the Love of the Game....

High school games around the state of Florida crank up very soon and another championship season is upon us. Excitement is in the air as players and coaches set their sights on district and state titles.

There is a sense of pride everyday as you put your school's colors on. But there is an unseen element in the air that is more p

Charlie Hustle vs. Big Mac

Happy New Year to you all. It has been awhile since my last blog. I have been spending a lot of time with my family and with an almost two year old walking around during the day, and doing homework and throwing the ball around with the 6 and 8 year old, I haven’t found much time to blog. The collapse of the Florida Winter League, although painful, has been a blessing for my family and I. I have been able to spend a bunch time with them. Spring training is right around the corner, hard to believe… Continue

How Can I Help My Son Play College Baseball? Part 1: Invest in His Game

Welcome to this three part series of, “How Can I Help My Son Play College Baseball?” We will hopefully cover all aspects of the journey from pre-teen to senior year baseball players with dreams of playing at the next level. From my experience in dealing with parents and players, they are very uninformed and confused about what it takes both academically and athletically to move beyond high school baseball. We will cover a wide range of topics including skills, recruiting, summer/fall teams, camp… Continue

Piggy Bank

It has been a rough day to say the least. I am not sure what was tougher, telling 23 young men that their young winter baseball season was coming to an end or laying in bed with a sobbing 6 year old boy trying to explain to him that the players will all be ok and that although his heartfelt, generous offer of all the money in his piggy bank was appreciated, it was not enough money to save the Florida Winter Baseball League. It is a shame. The only thing I agreed with in CEO Mickey Filippucci's s… Continue

Thanks Andy. I'll tell Ebo you said hi. I did one camp in St. Pete a few years back but it was only modestly received. Maybe it just needed a few years to grow like the AZ camp did. I would be very interested in doing another cne in FL if you think we could get enough players to come - at least 30. There are several coaches who live in FL and they'd be happy to do it. Let me know your thoughts. Best, John

I created a group for the FWBL for you to give the league some exposure on CheckSwing. Please invite all of the players, coaches, or anyone affiliated with the league to join. You can do it right from the FWBL group page once you join it. You could even put a CheckSwing badge on the FWBL website (http://www.fwbl.com/) next to the Facebook link. This would allow others to see the group and use the group forum, etc. Let me know if you need any help with it and good luck with the new league!
