I wanted to start a new discussion about kids ages at the club level. As I have said before, we are a club currently with  8U coach pitch team, a 10UAAA tournament team, and an 11UAA tournament team.…Continue

DarekGoetzman commented on Michael Settles's blog post Scoring from 3rd with 2 outs.
"Routine plays naturally become slightly more difficult when you put things in motion. That is why this is done. If a solid defensive fielder gets 100 chances at a routine play, he will make a throwing error 5-10 times. At any level HS and below Id…"

DarekGoetzman commented on Michael Settles's blog post Scoring from 3rd with 2 outs.
"I agree. Any base runner goes on contact. Only scenario I would say is if there is only a runner on 2B and a ball is hit to 3B hustle but make the 3B make a throw, don't run into a tag. But as stated, w 2 outs a defensive player should be…"

DarekGoetzman commented on Gregory Leonard Celeski's blog post The "FUN" Factor in Youth Baseball Misunderstood
"When baseball becomes a job (if you are good enough of course) then u can look at it as an everyday task or way of life. I think all of us wish we could have fun every day in life. Reality is that we all have jobs that aren't fun sometimes.…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Paul Richards's discussion Guaranteed free steal
"Your question is a difficult one because what you describe is not a realistic baseball situation. In more competitive scenarios this would never be the case. So my answer is really a question. I assume that your team isn't any better overall…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Bill Stanton's discussion Pitching Distances in the group Youth Baseball Coaches
"I have noticed that 46'- 65', 50'-70', 54'-80', 60-90' are perfect ratios. It's not the issue as much as allowing too old of players on the smaller dimensions. Outfield fence distances also play into this as…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Bill Stanton's discussion Pitching Distances in the group Youth Baseball Coaches
"I live in Phoenix where baseball is almost year around. 46'-65' is great to learn the game (8-10). Holding runners etc. 50'-70' is good for the next step BUT only for a year. 54'-80' is almost real baseball for kids…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Shaun Reed's discussion radar guns
"Of course it's nice to throw fuel, but that fact is that if that's all a guy can do he will get pounded... Give me a guy that can't throw hard but hits his spots in and out and I will win 8 out of 10 games that he starts."

DarekGoetzman replied to Keith Essary's discussion Intentional Walk in Little League

DarekGoetzman replied to Brandon Seymour's discussion Interference question...
"Yes the on deck batter is like a base coach. they have a right to their area but cant interfere with the defender. the best thing to do is stay put and let the defender work around you... Any interference beyond that would be a judgement call by the…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Dave Butler's discussion Switch Hitting?

DarekGoetzman replied to Michael Paes's discussion MLB ump call in the group Umpires
"I didn't see it but if I'm guessing rt, the team on defense probably made a pitching change before the hitter was announced. So the offensive team changed hitters for a better matchup... Yes?"

DarekGoetzman commented on Anthony Vontobel's blog post Why Is There Currently No Left Handed Catchers In the MLB
"I am a lefty that also plays adult league. I enjoy catching but as some of you have said, I have to be careful of the ball tailing away from 2B. Also, I would say that a lefty catchers time and accuracy to 3B is nowhere near what a Righty is. So…"

DarekGoetzman replied to Bill Stanton's discussion "Playing Up"?
"We have had this debate before. My opinion is that if the player can play up and be a starter or a "key" player on that team, then it makes sense. I've seen kids play up and be the 12th kid on a 12 man roster. He may enjoy playing w…"

Metal Spikes

Posted on August 6, 2012 at 1:51pm 14 Comments

It is time for my teams to start wearing metal cleats (or so they think). My issue with this is probably obvious to all of you. What I would like to do is give my players (and their parents) a solid stance on this, not just an opinion... For instance, I do not plan to let any of my players weir their metal cleats in any of our practices. I personally do not think any of these kids even need metal cleats BUT they do know they are allowed do wear them starting Aug 1st... They are however not…
