Michael, I like the thought process but I am more agressive with my hitters. I want my hitters going to the plate with a plan. The first player at the plate will typically take until they get a strike. After that I want guys looking for their pitch…

It's a good plan, but I've seen it backfire too. State tourney championship game. The home team had been tough to take the 1st pitch no matter what on every at bat. The other team knew this, so they literally threw belt high middle of the plate meat…

At the high school level, less than 50% of pitchers throw a strike on the first pitch. A lot of hitters make the mistake of being too aggressive at the plate and swing at the first pitch- getting themselves out 81% of the time. Every coach has commu…

I thought your article was good but you forget - your chances and average is always better when your ahead of the count and it's always lower when your behind that's easy to assess. One percentage you forgot to mention is that when a pitcher gets ah…

Great stuff! So much of what we hear, in any part of our lives, is verbal flotsam, but if we even try to listen, we'll hear what we need to know. (At least, I hope that for everyone!) Happy hittin'!

Wow, I like that one, it is a question you have to ask yourself if you really think you ''ve got it. I'm gonna use it with my players with big egos.

Listening......that is some great advice....you know my players always look me in the eye...that's what I teach...but are they listening...I often find myself wondering are they listening....Good stuff!!!

This is all good stuff. My best hitting coach I ever had had this to say. "You're swing at everything until it is out of the zone." If definition of zone was strike zone and comfort zone. Hitters count it was comfort zone and pitchers count it was s…

Hitting Strategy: Don't step into the batters box without a hitting game plan

It is widely acknowledged that hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult tasks in all of sports. Standing in the batters box 60 feet 6 inches away from the pitcher whom throws a white 3 inch baseball across a 17 inch plate at speeds up to 90+ mph with only a 33 inch bat possessing a sweet spot of 3. 7 inches can cause anxiety for many players. When you factor in the potential for pitches of different speeds, locations, and movements, as well as the 8 other position players behind the pitch… Continue

Don't swing at the first pitch

At the high school level, less than 50% of pitchers throw a strike on the first pitch. A lot of hitters make the mistake of being too aggressive at the plate and swing at the first pitch- getting themselves out 81% of the time. Every coach has communicated to their players the need to be patient at the plate however few coaches have actually explained the strategy behind being patient, what do we hope to accomplish, how does the hitter/team benefit, and what are the situations when you would dev… Continue

Best Advice I ever got...

When I was a young student athlete, I was given advice on everything from what to eat, how to workout to gain a competitive advantage, what coaches are looking for at the next level, etc. All great information however most was forgotten just after it swept through my ears. However, there is a single piece of advice that has remained with me to this day and I would like to pass it on to you. This golden nugget of information is so impacting that I use it in other aspects of my life...even to this… Continue

Michael, I'm working on an article for publication and am hoping to include the statistics you have for "Don't Swing at the First Pitch". Can you let me know where you got those stats so I can make use of them? Thanks

In professional baseball pitchers only throw the 1st pitch for a strike 65% of the time but the 1st pitch yields a batting average of .340+ wirh the most extra base hits and rbi's of any of the 12 counts so why automatically take? The hitter's task is to get a good pitch to hit and expect every pitch is going to be that pitch from the 1st pitch. He/she is always ready to hit and takes if it is not the good pitch. The key for each hitter is to learn his personal strike zone and get in it every at bat only coming out with 2k
