One Giant Leap... For Umpires!

Posted on April 29, 2010 at 3:30am 10 Comments

The internet has been abuzz recently with video of Fordham University shortstop Brian Kownacki somersaulting over Iona catcher James Beck in an airborne bid to score a run for the Rams, and there seems to be some confusion among bloggers and commenters about whether or not it was a legal play and if the plate umpire made the right call. But there's a lot more to Kownacki's handspring and the events immediately before and after it than at first meets the… Continue

Tiffany Brooks just made history by becoming the first American woman** in the 21st century to sign a baseball contract with a professional men's team . She just came off a successful stint in the Arizona Winter League, where she and…

Belle of the Ballfield

Tiffany Brooks, checkswing.com member, is playing baseball in the Arizona Winter League. And she's not the only one: Eri Yoshida, the first woman to pitch pro baseball in Japan, is also taking her game to the next level as a pitcher for the Yuma Scorpions. What is this world coming to? Women playing baseball with the guys? OMG. Tiffany and Eri RULE !!!! Stay focused, my friends, and keep your eyes on the goal: to throw strikes, play your best, and… Continue

Ha! One thing I've learned is that it is impossible to take a bad pic of our Jack Russell Terrier. So naturally I try to piggy back onto that whenever possible! Thanks! Anytime I write about baseball I will be sure to post the link to my status.

Thanks, Perry.  Sorry it took so long to get back to you!  I hardly get on Checkswing, but decided to check my profile today.  I've read up on you and really admire you as a female umpire.  I played softball (slow pitch) for many, many years and throughout my military career.  In 2004, our Little League had a shortage of umpires, so I showed up for an umpire meeting at a local pizza place and the rest is history.  I primarily do Little League (90-foot) and started doing high school last year.  I've been lucky in that I've had great supporters here in my district and at the high school association.  I was selected to do Little League Western Region Senior BB last year, which was quite an accomplishment.  I also attended Jim Evans Dessert Classic in Arizona in October 2009.  I really want to learn more about umpiring baseball (I don't think that ever ends) and work my up to at least NCAA in baseball.  I'm older (started at 44 in 2004), but I can still run and look sharp on the field.  You are an inspiration and I wish I had started doing this sooner!

Hi Perry! Thanks for your kind words. My mom says the same thing. All of this is the path that is supposed to happen. I am NOT giving up on baseball in any way. I will find a place to play no matter who says what! I am getting ready now for my "town league" and will be playing steadily for the spring, summer, and fall! I am so excited. My Pine Forge team has been so supportive and I can't say enough about them. Thank goodness for them or I think I would have to move to a town that does accept girls in some way. I will email you my address. I was hoping you didn't forget about me. I can't wait to get the book. Take care, Wynnie:)

You would LOVE Phuket! It is a terrific place, and it's so hot and sunny all the time. When I went back to HK before flying home, I froze. I think it was about 50* F... ICK!!! And, I hear ya about being sick of Chinese food. There's a bigger variety of food in Phuket (Thai, Indian, Italian.... pizza and pasta), and European... so you can change it up a lot more. I absolutely love it there and would love to go back. It's so beautiful, and the people are great.

Thanks Perry for all of the great information and advice. Oddly enough, my Dad gave me an autographed baseball of Bob Gibson a few years ago, when I really decided I wanted to become a great pitcher. I carry it in my baseball bag to remind me to also "never let up" and to stay focused and intense on the ball field (doesn't help the value of the ball, getting banged around, but it helps me:) My dad has taught me, from early on, a great deal about the history of baseball and and about the many who have paved the way to this point.

Jackie Robinson is another great whom I have studied and keep close in mind when I think/face the difficulties women have and continue to have to face in a game dominated by men. I have heard the negative comments from the stands and the opposing teams, but try not to let it affect my play. I figure if I keep perfoming as good as or even better than their boys, how can what they say hurt me. I know in my heart I DO belong.

Thanks for the offer to get me a copy of the book by Ms. Ardell. That is very generous. I look forward to reading it. My parents say hello and also thank you for your support. I love knowing that there are others out there who are as passionate about the game as me!!!

Take care, Wynnie

Hello Ms. Barber,
This is Wynnie McCann (15 year old girl baseball player). Not sure if you remember, but we met in New York in December when Justine Siegal and Maia Weinstock held a hitting clinic. I have started to do some research on girls/women in baseball as I am getting ready to tryout for my high school baseball team. Hope all is well and hope to keep in touch. Take care, Wynnie
