What Could Happen Soon: a Review of She's On First reissue

Posted on June 1, 2010 at 10:30am 1 Comment

If I could put my finger on the exact time and place when a nugget of belief that women could play baseball first revealed itself in my psyche, it was about the seventh inning, Tuesday, June 16, 1998. I sat in my season seats, practically…

Calling all female baseball players

Posted on April 29, 2010 at 11:02am 0 Comments

USA Baseball has scheduled several preliminary women's baseball tryouts in June and July this year. Locations include Phoenix, New London (Conn.), Orlando, Cary (NC), Chicago, and San Francisco. From these various locations, select women ballplayers will be invited to Cary, North Carolina, where the Women's National Team Trials will be conducted Aug. 2-6. From there, Team USA will head to Venezuela to participate in the 2010 Women World Cup of Baseball.

If you know anyone who plays…

Do many baseball authors have assistants?

Posted on February 28, 2010 at 12:49pm 0 Comments

I could use an assistant right about now, but she or he would have to work for free. I have a June 30 deadline for my book about women's baseball, and there are still many tapes to transcribe and research to do. Although I am still excited by the book and hoping it will mean something to women baseball players, I am upset with my apparent lack of progress. How do professors (adjunct or otherwise) manage all this? How do partial caregivers of elderly people on oxygen manage to… Continue

Women baseball players and those who love them

Posted on May 22, 2009 at 4:19pm 0 Comments

I am preparing a book proposal as requested by McFarland Publishers about women who are playing the game now. Some new and exciting things are happening, especially with the International Baseball Federation planning to add women's baseball to the Olympic games in 2016. So, I hope some of you out there can help me. I have already interviewed 18 women, three men, and one girl for my masters thesis titled "She's Ready to Play: Women Who Play Baseball," which is the basis for my book. However, I… Continue

No, No, Not Harry Kalas!

Posted on April 13, 2009 at 4:30pm 3 Comments

I am sitting here, the Philadelphia Phillies/Washington Nationals game going on behind me. To my left, a photo folder from the 2002 Phillies Phestival is open. In it, I stand beside a seated Harry Kalas. There’s a grin on both of our faces. Before the picture was taken, Harry asked my name and spoke to me for a moment or two. In front of the picture, bobbleheads of Harry and Richie “Whitey” Ashburn stand together on the same base wrapped in clear plastic. In front of that is a toy that when it… Continue

Sheila I showed my husband your profile photo here and he even swears that you could be my twin. Oh heck I'm just proud that you're in baseball too. It's good to have all us women involved now in the sport. Baseball is a great sport regardless who plays it. I'd even vote a Martian in if he or she had baseball talent!

You are too funny like me. I want to see a close up of you. Dang woman you are almost my spitting image in my face, or is it your face. Or is it our face??? Even your build and your arms are exactly like me. Could we be long lost twins? I was born in November '57.

Wow and you look like me too. Except you have the boobs and I don't! I even have the same glasses as you. Cool.

Hey Sheila I'm playing in my 11th year with the men. I'm 52 years old. The Detroit Tigers MLB invited me to tryout for their Minor League Team last year in Florida. I did it! I'm also a breast cancer survivor. My goal is to swing the wood-painted pink bat that MLB uses on Mother's Day. It should be a real live breast cancer survivor who is a baseball player at the plate on that day not just the guys doing it.

I play for the Las Vegas Sandvipers men's baseball team. Just google my name "Norine Rathbone" and all the articles will come up about me. Bless you for writing a book about us women baseball players.

Congrats on the book, Sheila! Invite any female baseball players to join the new Women's group here on CheckSwing. It would be great if it became the central place where all women baseball players could connect and keep in touch!

Forgot to mention, I'm playing in the AWBF Nationals in Huntingburg, IN this October. Super excited! Are you going as well? Best of luck in Philly!

Hi Sheila! Saw your post on MSBL/MABL. I wish I could go to Philly. The East Coast Yankees invited me, but I'm so broke from all the baseball traveling. Need to slow down a bit to catch up on my finances. Glad to hear you're going though, it should be fun!
