"I assume you refer to younger kids.  I teach kids to throw the change up with a simple palm ball grip.  All this assumes that the pitcher can spot up FB low/outside on 7 of 10 attempts, and go hi/low with fastball as well.  In other…"

Darrell Coulter replied to Will Laurence's discussion Teaching the Changeup?
"The change up should be thrown just like every other pitch. Same arm slot and arm speed.  Its the grip and and wrist and forearm angle at pitch release that causes the change of speeds. Have them play catch with a 3 finger or circle change grip…"

Teaching the Changeup?

I feel as though I understand how a changeup is thrown, but do not articulate it well to younger players. What are the key points to focus on?  What are the different grips?  Why use one grip over another? What age is appropriate to start throwing the changeup? How do you explain the purpose of the pitch?Sorry for the vague questions.  Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!  CheckSwing, the smartest group of baseball guys on the planet!See More

"1- You are 100% correct. 2- In today's game guys like your Dad are labeled as "Daddy Ball" coaches and parents will be looking for the nearest "professional coach" for their 9 year old. These coaches today make a living with…"

Steve Chriscoe replied to Will Laurence's discussion Teaching the Changeup?
"Think of it this way.  The fastball is basically thrown with the index & middle fingers, and thumb on opposite side.  Teach kids to throw the changeup with pinky and ring fingers, and thumb on the bottom.  This is especially…"
