Keith Essary replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"I have had this issue.  I don't understand it either.  Just because you may have been an All-American college player or even played professionally, doesn't mean you can coach.  That is 2 very different aspects of the game.…"

Fidel replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"I played professionally and people tell ask me to coach all the time.  But, I know my limitations.  I am not coach material.  I would ruin a team vs. develop them."

David LeVine replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"The funniest and stupidest experience I ever ran across was when I was applying for a high school coach.  The AD asked if I played above high school ball.  I, of course said no and she said that their parents are very demanding.  I…"

Shaun Reed replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"I think its that way, because if a guy played at a high level then its assumed that Canidate A had better coaching and that means more experience being around better coaches and better players.  That could mean more contacts and with the…"

Robb Lawrence replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"Coaches, this is great stuff!  Exactly what I wanted to get out of this...experience and knowledge about the topic.  For example, I almost word for word explained what Coach Greene said in his reply to someone a month or so ago about this…"

Scott Emerich replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"For me it would be coaching experience.  Some of my younger coaches have played college ball but have zero ability to translate their talent into a practice routines.  Many also tend to relate best with the "better" players…"

Mike Greene replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"David is 100% correct. Coaching experience should trump playing experience and does on the success meter. Take a look at D-1 colleges and pros. The successful coaches were average players that played multiple positions and understood the game. They…"

Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?

Wanted to ask this question as sometimes in the hiring of baseball related jobs and in my own experience, playing experience seems to trump prior coaching experience when choosing the ideal candidate.  For example, if candidate A has played DI baseball in the past but has little coaching experience and candidate B has a Master's 's level education and broad HS/College coaching experience, but didn't play above HS, most times candidate A is chosen for the position.  This seems to be most…See More

David LeVine replied to Robb Lawrence's discussion Coaching Experience vs. Playing Experience. What matters more for job seeking baseball coaches?
"All potential employers make the same mistake.  They seem to think because you played D1 and/or above, you could teach others to excell as well.  This is absolutely stupid.  The fact of the matter is you were born with the talent to…"
