The "Other" College Scholarship

By Jake Chapman, Showcase U Co-founder

The Academic Scholarship

Unless you live under a rock, I imagine that you are hearing a pretty consistent message from your teachers, coaches and counselors, about the importance of academics throughout your high school and college careers. We hear it all the time that the best opportunity to get recruited is in the classroom. Let's face it, some of us… Continue

Leading Off Third Base

Game Scenario

Imagine being just ninety feet away from scoring the tying run of the biggest game of the season. The game has been well played with stellar defense and great small-ball baseball strategy. The pressure mounts for the hitter, who faces a full count with the game on the line. With the pitch on the way most would argue that the game is solely on the shoulders of the hitter at the plate. As is often the case, the importance of sound baserunning is forgotten. We’ll get back… Continue

Who's Calling The Pitches?

This article is cross posted on

I have noticed a trend of coaches relaying pitch signals to catchers. I’ve seen it at many high school games. And, I’ve seen it at almost all college games I’ve attended. While watching a Boston College game this season, I noticed BC catcher Tony Sanchez wearing something on his forearm resembling a quarterback wrist coach.… Continue

Advice for Travel Baseball Players

By Jake Chapman, Showcase U Co-founder

I have spent the better part of this summer watching a lot of baseball, specifically travel team tournaments and showcases. The players I've seen this summer have varied greatly in speed, size, arm strength and overall baseball talent. And depending where I sit each game, either near the parents or with the… Continue

Score Runs With The Contact Play

This article is cross posted at

You are the runner on 3rd base. The infield is drawn in. How do you give yourself the best chance to score? You will score on a hit, a sacrifice, and possibly on a passed ball/wild pitch. Another way to score that run is by breaking for home once you see the ball hit on the ground. This is commonly known as "the contact play." What I like about the contact play is that it puts pressure on… Continue

Game 7 Mentality.....

On the way back from Dunedin tonight. We won 4 to 3. A very well played game by both teams. Our situational hitting was the difference. We had runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs twice and were able to score three of the four runs. I will take it. In the 2nd inning, the hitter hit a ground ball to second base to drive in the run and move the runner to third. The next hitter lined a base hit to right for an RBI. Nice. In the eighth, same situation. This time, our third baseman hit a sac fly to… Continue

The Game's Epidemic.......

The second half has begun. We lost a tough one tonight on the road in Sarasota. Lauren Gagnier threw 8 innings and only allowed 1 run, but it was enough to beat the Flying Tigers tonight, who scored none! We had some opportunities, but no big hit. A couple of base running blunders didn’t help things either. Running the bases correctly is a huge part of the game and is not taught or stressed enough with young players. Simple things, like being aggressive on balls in the dirt, are so important in… Continue

What it is all about......

Just got into a rain delay in a day game here in Lakeland, and for some odd reason, inspired to write a few words. The Flying Tigers are currently in last place in the North Division of the Florida State League with 2 games left in the 1st half. Come Thursday, we start 0-0 for the second half with a chance for the playoffs

Managing in the minor leagues can be frustrating at times. Lots of issues to deal with. Road trips, hotels, player moves, reports, and the rain and heat in Florida… Continue
