What a frustrating weekend in the world of youth baseball/softball in my town. We are ramping up for the beginning of the youth baseball and softball seasons. First, a little background...My 2 daughters played softball in the league last season. My youngest played her third season in the 7-9 league. I've coached that team each of those years. My older daughter played in the 10-12 league. I was the assistant coach… Continue

A childhood friend of mine is set to make his return to Major League Baseball and the Brewers starting rotation this Thursday against the Marlins. After 2 Tommy John surgeries and rehab the last 2 years, he's made his way back. Good Luck, Cap!

I was coaching my kids' 10-12 game yesterday afternoon and we were short one player, so I had my youngest daughter play (She's 8 and technically has 2 more years in her current league which is all pitching machine). In the 10-12 league, the first 3 innings are kid-pitch (with a paid umpire) and the last 3 innings are the machine. Obviously there is quite a difference in the speed and accuracy of the machine v.s. the pitchers. Not to mention the fact… Continue

This past Saturday, Bill and I attended the Ripken Baseball Coaches Clinic at the high school in Milton, Massachusetts. Put on by former MLB players Cal Ripken Jr., Billy Ripken, and John Habyan, it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. John started off with pitching - going through many of the drills that he uses with his… Continue

I was listening to a local sports talk radio station yesterday and the hosts (none of whom were ballplayers) were discussing the worth of certain MLB players. In doing this analysis, they were placing quite a bit of emphasis on individual statistics - specifically RBI. They were then comparing players based on their 2009 RBI totals and equating that directly to the player's ability to drive in runs. As I was listening, all I kept thinking was how… Continue

Great game last night between the Dirt Dogs and Senators in the Western Mass Wood Baseball League (WMWBL). With the game tied 3-3, with 2 outs in the bottom half of the last inning, Greg Traska worked a walk and then stole second. With 2 strikes on the batter, he took off for third and the throw was off the mark and went into left field. He then broke for home and slid in safely with the winning run.
The win puts the Dirt Dogs 3 up in the loss column over the Senators and gives us… Continue

As new players and coaches join CheckSwing.net, the community is getting more and more exciting. Players and coaches are connecting with friends from their past that they have not seen or talked to in years! One of the great things about playing ball is the camaraderie that's established on the field and in the dugout. Lifelong friendships are formed from playing ball with someone. If you know any teammates from previous teams that you've played on in… Continue
