Catchers: Blocking the Plate

Two nights ago, Carlos Santana a promising young catcher from the Cleveland Indians was taken off the field at Fenway Park after a collision with Boston's Ryan Kalish. There is now quite a bit of debate in the press about whether or not catchers should be blocking the plate at all... or if they do, what is the correct way?
