BC earns a spot in the 2009 NCAA Baseball Tournament

Boston College is in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament for the first time since 1967! While I haven't seen all of their games this season, they played well in those that I did see. In the Beanpot at Fenway park, they definitely showed they can hit. BC (33-24) earned the No. 3 seed in the Austin Regional with top-seeded and host Texas (40-13-1). Texas State (41-15) was awarded the second seed and Army (34-19) is the fourth seed. The Eagles will open the regional with Texas State on Friday and will play at 1 p.m. CT at Texas' UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The four-team regionals are a double-elimination bracket that spans from May 29-June 1. Hopefully they can do some damage in this year's tournament! I just wish their opening round games were on TV! (I graduated from BC in 1994 and am a die hard BC fan.)

Cool. Tony Sanchez? He's having a great year. From the Globe this week...

"The mind-set is one of winning with small rallies and fundamental baseball, and it is led by junior catcher Tony Sanchez, who became the first Eagle to be chosen first-team All-ACC.

Now the Eagles can look past regular-season goals into postseason possibilities.

"We're not going to concede anything," said Aoki. "We competed in what is arguably the best conference in the country and we feel we can compete with anybody. We're not going down there on a sightseeing mission."

Sanchez, who almost certainly will be a first-round pick in next month's major league draft, says the week was like a dream sequence that has turned into a dream season."

WOW! BC was down 5-2 in the top of the ninth and then scored 6 runs to take an 8-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Texas State then hit a 2 run homer to make it 8-7 and then had the tying run on second when BC struck the final batter out. BC plays in the winner's bracket tomorrow at 6 pm CT.

Did anyone else see the 25 inning game between BC and Texas? What great pitching on both sides! BC eventually lost in the 25th and that pretty much tired them out for the next day. Here are some of the stats...

* The game lasted 7 hours, 3 minutes. It ended at 1:05 AM local time(central time).
* There were 683 pitches thrown.
* There were 192 plate appearances and 171 at bats.
* Texas pitcher Austin Wood threw 13 innings and 169 pitches out of the bullpen.
* Wood did not allow a hit for the first 12 1/3 innings.
* Wood allowed 2 hits, 0 runs, 4 walks, and struck out 14 in those 13 innings pitched.
* 120 of Wood's 169 pitches were strikes.
* Texas' Michael Torres and Travis Tucker each had 12 at bats, so they now share an NCAA record for most at bats in a game.
* Tucker hit the game-winning single in his 12th at bat.
* Texas scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning, then not again until the 25th. So it took them 23 innings to score another run.
* Boston College's Mike Belfiore had an amazing pitching performance as well that was overshadowed by Wood's. He pitched 9 2/3 innings, allowed 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and struck out 13 over 129 pitches in relief.
* Texas' Austin Dicharry recorded the win, and pitched 5 2/3 of 1-hit ball with no runs allowed.
* Boston College only had 1 extra-base hit.
* There were 42 strikeouts.
* 7 pitchers did not allow a run.
* Texas left 24 runners on base.
* Boston College only had 8 hits.
* Boston College did not commit an error.
* Boston College did not attempt a stolen base.
* Texas had 91 at bats and 103 plate appearances.
* There were 4 runs scored through 6 innings, then none for the next 18 innings.
* There were no triples and only 1 home run.

An instant classic for sure. Unfortunately, very few people saw the game because the TV coverage was non-existent.
I wish ESPN, Fox Sports, etc. would wake up and start broadcasting more college baseball games.

I agree. CBS internet coverage was just ok. They really should cover the games in Hi-Def on TV.
