Good Play but more to do with bad base running.  Good post though.

Partly. I suppose the third base coach should have helped him as well, but it was still a smart play on Wright's part.

Bad base running on runner and coach part and a good head up on  D Wright's
Comment by RodChapman on August 18, 2011 at 4:22pm
yeah it was a good heads up play.  Not sure where the runner was going anyway.

The fake throw was what did it.  The runner, Cameron Maybin has great speed and I bet he was looking to try and score assuming DW makes the throw across the diamond.

I was watching this live and must have rewinded it 5 times to watch again.  Great play!

Kyle you are the only other person I know that may have that keen instinct to do something like that. Wright" Got Dirty" on that play

I have seen it work when the shortstop fakes a throw with a man on second and then tags the runner on second but I have never seen it work at third.  I have also seen a back door double play by getting the force at second and then throwing to third rather than first to get the runner rounding third.  The baserunner rounded the bag and stopped.  He was looking for the ball.  I don't think it was bad base running.  I would put more blame on the coach.  I am sure he saw Wright act out the throw and then started looking to communicate with the runner.  Everyone was fooled and a great heads up play by Wright.  I wonder if he did it because he did not think he could bet the runner at first or it was an automatic instinct.

Those kind of deke em out plays are great they can when successful certainly take a team out of the inning or even the game, there are times when rounding a bag is not the thing to do that certainly was one of those times, It appears to me Maybin lost sight of the ball with no help from his 3rd base coach, I teach those who I coach to, when on base to quickly find the ball when possible, always know where the ball is.

That play reminds me of the run down between 1st and 2nd base last season when Jeter faked a throw to the coverage at 1st base then took the ball right to his glove making the runner totally think he was throwing the ball there forcing the runner to actually turn and run into the tag.

I cannot remember his name or who he plays with now but he is one of the great shortstops in the game, During the world games he had a routine double play with a runner on 2nd going to third instead of throwing to 1st he wheeled and threw to 3rd nailing the runner over running the base, I just love those plays.

Those plays remind me of the ones that could be outs if the player making the tag would have alertly stayed with the play instead of not when/if the runner momentarily loses contact with the bag after the tag.
