The qualities of a great hitter

Great hitters are far and few between in
baseball. The reason for this is that hitting is one of the most challenging
skills in sports to perfect. If you had played ball long enough you know that
there was maybe one or two hitters on all the teams you have ever played on,
that can really hit.

For the purpose of this article  the definition of a
great hitter would be someone who can hit for high average and can hit for power
and put up good slugging numbers at the same time. There are a lot of hitters
that do well at one or the other, but the great ones can do both.

For
travel ball players hitting near .500 and slugging over .500 is superior. High
School hitters who hit over .400 and can slug over .500 are hitters that would
fall in this category, and professional hitters who can hit over .320 and slug
over .500 are top level hitters also. Hitters who can put up these type of
numbers consistently at each of the levels have the qualities that greats
possess. These type of hitters such as Ted Williams, set the bar for all others
who want to possess these qualities.

The truth is that not all the
qualities of a great hitter are attainable to most hitters, but a lot of them
can be learned. The one that cannot be learned is that great hitters have the
DNA that it takes to be great.

Quality 1

Most great hitters are
just born to hit

They were most likely destined toward their career. That
is probably the one quality that is the strongest. You have to have the baseball
gods on your side.

Quality 2

Great hitters are strong and
quick

They are natural athletes for baseball and the ball bounces off
their bat differently then most other hitters. The good news is there are
programs players' can train in to help with strenght and speed to improve their
instincts and reflexes.

Quality 3

Great Hitters have good swing
mechanics

The biomechanics of the swing must be very good in order to
become a great hitter. Some hitters have flaws in their swings, but have enough
will power and ability to overcome them to still be successful. Many good
hitters have become great by working on the biomechanics of the
swing.

Unfortunately, there have been many talented hitters who have had
their dream stripped by allowing dis-informed coaches to mess with their swing.
The great hitters normally worry less about their swing than most and this gives
them the ability to focus more on what results they want. So when learning the
mechanics of the swing, it would behoove you to find the right information that
helps give you more power and increases your chances for more hits at the same
time. The simpler this is the better so you can focus more on results rather
than over perfecting your swing. There has to be a fine line.

Quality
4

Great hitters are super confident.

Great hitters confident
levels are so high that they rarely get in slumps, and if they do they can get
out of them quicker than most others. They are totally focused and in the zone
most of the time. Their level of mental toughness is so large that negatives
thoughts usually cannot penetrate their minds. Great hitters are so used to
success that it is like riding a bike for them.

Learning confidence tools
on how to build ones momentum up to this level is the key for good hitters
wanting to be great. It usually takes a lot of mental practice and knowledge of
how to keep putting positive thoughts in while kicking negative thoughts out.
This is the key to getting in a zone and there have been good hitters who have
gone great because they were wise enough to search for this information and
dedicated enough to work on it.

Unfortunately, most careers have ended
because players have lost their confidence and fell so low and experienced too
much difficulty that it caused most players to quit, give up, or sometimes was
the cause of an incurring  injury.

Those who are wondering what it takes
to be a great hitter may need to look real deep if that is their goal. It is
achievable, and really you don't have to have all these qualities to become good
enough to succeed or earn that scholarship you have been wanting.

Working towards these qualities and being aware of the pitfalls will put
you in a better position than most.
